I agree it's a beautiful photo.

Oddly, there's an exhibit at the National Maritime Museum on Greenwich, UK (about tsunamis) which provides a similar possibility, and I had a go at photographing it just the other week. The conditions were far from perfect. It's nowhere as good as Paul's, but it is similar in aim at least. it's at my blog post at http://fizzogblog.typepad.com/fizzogblog/2009/03/a-terrible-beauty.html, if you want to have a look.

Bizarrely, I was at Westonbirt last weekend, and my photos from there can be seen at http://fizzogblog.typepad.com/fizzogblog/2009/03/national-arboretum.html and http://www.flickr.com/photos/fizzog/sets/72157615686645831/

I think these are bees, not wasps. I have witnessed this before whilst walking my dog. In some species of bee ( asian) this is a method used to kill predatory hornets. The bees surround the hornet and move their wings very fast, building up heat to over 47 degrees celcius. This literally cooks the hornet to death.

Hey Chris - really chuffed that you like my work, the vortex was a real labour of love and I'm glad it's being appreciated! Love your 360 work by the way, I may be getting in touch to hire your services one day if the right job comes in.

Thanks

Paul

No, really, I do love these pictures, the clarity is just breathtaking. If I was really there, I probably could take breaths underwater but with none of the usual side effects.

Thanks Paul.

Insert Hot Fuzz quote here....
